Robert Patrick, born on November 5, 1958, in Marietta, Georgia, experienced a childhood marked by frequent relocation. He grew up in various locations, including Boston, Massachusetts, Dayton, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio. As the oldest of five siblings, he embarked on his higher education journey at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. However, his academic path took an unexpected turn when he discovered a passion for acting after enrolling in a drama course. This newfound interest led him to leave college and pursue a different career trajectory.
Following his departure from Bowling Green, Patrick initially worked as a house painter to make ends meet. This occupation continued until a life-altering boating accident occurred on Lake Erie in 1984. Demonstrating remarkable courage, he swam for three hours in a heroic effort to rescue other stranded individuals. During this perilous endeavor, he narrowly escaped drowning himself. This traumatic experience served as a catalyst for significant change in his life.
In the wake of the boating accident, Patrick made a pivotal decision to relocate from Ohio to Los Angeles, California, to pursue his acting aspirations. During the early stages of his career, he supplemented his income by working in a bar. In fact, he even lived in his car for a period of time, highlighting his dedication and determination to succeed in the competitive world of Hollywood.
Patrick initially gained exposure through appearances in various direct-to-video television movies. He also had a brief role in the action film Die Hard 2 (1990). However, his career breakthrough arrived when he portrayed the formidable T-1000, a liquid-metal, shape-shifting assassin, in James Cameron's critically acclaimed blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). This iconic role propelled him into the limelight and opened doors to a range of opportunities.
Following his success in Terminator 2, Patrick secured roles in numerous feature films, including Last Action Hero (1993), Fire in the Sky (1993), and Striptease (1996). His performance in Fire in the Sky garnered the attention of Chris Carter, the creator of the popular television series The X-Files (1993). When David Duchovny reduced his involvement in the series during its seventh season, Patrick was cast as FBI Special Agent John Doggett, adding a fresh dynamic to the show.
Beyond his acting achievements, Patrick is a dedicated supporter of the military and the USO. Inspired by his grandfather, an Army veteran who served in multiple wars, Patrick has a deep respect for troops. He frequently visits hospitals with the USO and has participated in several USO tours, visiting service members and military families in various countries. He is also a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and co-owns Harley-Davidson of Santa Clarita. Patrick currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with his wife, Barbara, and their two children.
